Questions to Ask when Buying a Used Horse Trailer

Good Morning bloggers!

Here at Burdette Brothers, we sell a lot of new and used horse trailers in Maryland. Depending on what you are looking for, sometimes a used trailer can be just as nice as a new one, and fit all of your needs at a more reasonable price. We will work with our clients to the best of our knowledge to disclose all information about the trailer. However, as a client, it is important when looking for used horse trailers to know what questions to ask. Here are some questions you may want to look into:

  • Has the trailer been repainted?  If so, was the trailer sandblasted first?
  • Has the trailer had any treatments for rust?
  • Have the previous owners had any problems with leaking?
  • Are there any signs of leaking such as moisture, stains, damage?
  • Had the previous owners resealed/recaulked the roof or any windows/doors?
  • What is the roof made of?  Steel?  Aluminum?  Fiberglass?
  • Are there any holes in the roof?
  • How old are the tires?
  • Are the tires the sames size?
  • When was the last time the tires were replaced?
  • Are there marks, dents, dings on the trailer from the horses pawing or kicking?
  • Is there any torn padding on the walls or on dividers?  Bent dividers?
  • Are there any loose screws, rivets, or anything a horse can catch on and hurt themselves?
  • Do all the latches work?
  • Is there enough room for the horses you plan to haul? Take into account the size of your horses and how many you will be hauling at one time.
  • Are there any major dents, scratches, etc to the trailer that is going to require body work?
As you know, not every used trailer can be in like new condition, however here at Burdette Brothers, we are your one-stop-shop and can do the bodywork and minor repairs for you! We will handle everything and make your new, used trailer ready for the road!
